Residential Duct Cleaning Process
Exactly what happens when we clean the ducts in your home – 18 steps from arrival to your Clean Air Certificate, carried out by NADCA-certified technicians.
STEP BY STEP
How We Clean Your Home’s Ducts
For preparation tips, timing and common questions, see our residential duct cleaning page.

STEP 1
Arrival and Inspection
Two certified technicians arrive at the scheduled time, in a marked or unmarked vehicle. Before starting, they walk through your home and map every supply and return vent on an activity sheet.

STEP 2
Equipment Set Up
The technicians bring in and set up commercial-grade duct cleaning equipment for the job.

STEP 3
Floor Protection
Drop sheets are laid down to protect your floors along the work path.

STEP 4
Pets and Children Kept Clear
We ask that pets, children and toys stay away from the work areas – out of the house if possible – for everyone’s safety and so the work can run without interruption.

STEP 5
Vents Covered for Negative Pressure
Every vent is covered with foam blocks or blue paper, or closed, before work begins. This lets the system hold negative air pressure, so dust is pulled toward the vacuum instead of blowing back into your rooms.

STEP 6
Starting in the Furnace Room
Work begins in the furnace room, where the ductwork connects to the main lines.

STEP 7
Before: Your Ductwork
An example of what the inside of a home’s ductwork looks like before cleaning.

STEP 8
Vacuum Connected
A commercial-grade vacuum is connected to the supply and return lines.

STEP 9
Return Vents Air-Blown
Air at 300 PSI is blown into every return vent first, pushing dirt and debris into the main lines to be collected.

STEP 10
Supply Vents Air-Blown
The same 300 PSI air is then blown into every supply vent, driving dirt and debris into the main lines.

STEP 11
Main Lines: Snake Jet
The main lines in the basement are cleaned with a retractable snake jet system at 300 PSI. It reaches corners and hard-to-reach sections and works like an air rake, driving loose dirt toward the vacuum.

STEP 12
Main Lines: Semi-Robotic Brush
A semi-robotic brush scrubs the inner walls of the main duct lines, repeated two to five times as needed to loosen buildup and move it toward the vacuum.

STEP 13
Main Lines: Final Snake Jet Pass
The main lines get a third pass with the snake jet system at 300 PSI to clear anything the brushing loosened.

STEP 14
After: Your Ductwork
The same ductwork after cleaning.

STEP 15
Access Points Sealed
Every one-inch access point is closed with a black plug, and eight-inch access holes are covered with a metal plate sealed with duct tape or aluminum tape.

STEP 16
Clean Up and System Check
The work area is cleaned, and the furnace and air conditioner are checked to make sure everything is in order.

STEP 17
Clean Air Certificate
You receive a Clean Air Certificate for the work completed.

STEP 18
Report and Walkthrough
The technicians report back to you on the work done and answer any questions before they leave.
