AC Coil Cleaning

Cleaning of the indoor evaporator coil – the part of your air conditioner that cools and dehumidifies the air. Dirty coils cool less and cost more to run.

Why AC Coils Need Cleaning

The evaporator coil sits above the furnace in most homes, and all the air the system moves passes through its fins. Dust that gets past the filter sticks to the cold, wet coil surface and builds into a layer that blocks airflow and insulates the coil, so it absorbs less heat. The result is weaker cooling, longer run times, higher energy use and, in bad cases, a coil that ices over. A dirty coil can also slow drainage and leave standing water in the condensate pan. The outdoor half of the system needs its own attention too – see condenser coil cleaning.

Signs It Is Due

  • The house takes longer to cool than it used to
  • Weaker airflow from the registers in cooling mode
  • Ice forming on the refrigerant lines or coil
  • Water around the furnace or a slow condensate drain
  • A musty smell when the air conditioning starts
  • Higher summer electricity bills with no other change

Common Questions

Can every AC coil be cleaned?

Most can, but some coils sit in sealed cabinets that cannot be opened without cutting into the system. If that is the case with yours, we will tell you before any work starts rather than force it.

How often should the coil be cleaned?

Every few years for most homes, or sooner if cooling performance drops. Keeping the furnace filter changed is the best way to keep the coil clean between cleanings.

Do you recharge refrigerant?

No. In Ontario, handling refrigerant requires a technician holding an Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) card. If a coil shows signs of a leak or icing that cleaning does not explain, we will tell you so it can be checked.

Is this the same as condenser cleaning?

No. The evaporator coil is indoors, usually on top of the furnace. The condenser coil is in the outdoor unit. Both affect efficiency, and many customers have both cleaned before the cooling season.
