Furnace Cleaning

Cleaning of the furnace blower and cabinet – the part of the system that pushes air through every duct in the house. Often booked alongside duct cleaning, across the Greater Toronto Area.

Why the Furnace Blower Needs Cleaning

Every bit of air your ductwork carries passes through the furnace blower first. Dust that gets past the filter coats the blower wheel, and a dirty blower moves less air, works harder, and sends dust straight back into the ducts. Cleaning the ducts without cleaning the blower leaves the main source of recirculated dust in place, which is why furnace cleaning and duct cleaning are usually done together. Gas components are a separate matter: burners, gas valves and heat exchanger inspection are work for a TSSA-licensed gas technician, and your furnace should have that annual service as well.

Signs It Is Due

  • Dust blowing from registers when the fan starts
  • The furnace running louder or longer than it used to
  • Visible dust on the blower or inside the cabinet
  • A filter that was left too long between changes
  • Duct cleaning booked without the furnace included
  • Several years since the blower was last cleaned

Common Questions

Is this the same as a furnace tune-up?

No. A tune-up is annual maintenance of the gas and combustion side by a licensed gas technician. We clean the air side – blower, cabinet and return plenum – which a tune-up often does not cover in depth. Most homes benefit from both.

Do you work on gas components?

No. Burners, gas valves and heat exchangers are regulated work for a TSSA-licensed gas technician. If we see something on that side that concerns us, we will tell you so you can have it checked.

How often should the furnace be cleaned?

At the same interval as the ducts – every three to five years for most homes – and any time the ducts are cleaned, so clean air is not pushed through a dirty blower.

Does a clean furnace use less energy?

A blower caked in dust moves less air and has to run longer to do the same job, so cleaning it restores the airflow the system was designed for. How much that saves depends on how dirty it was, so we do not promise a number.
