Furnace Filter Maintenance

Filter checks, replacement, and cleaning of reusable filters and electronic air cleaners – the simplest maintenance in any heating and cooling system, and the one most often forgotten.

Why Filters Matter

The filter is the system’s first line of defence: it catches dust before it reaches the blower, coils and ductwork. A clogged filter restricts airflow, making the furnace and air conditioner work harder, and once it is overloaded, dust starts getting past it into the rest of the system. Standard one-inch filters typically need changing every one to three months; thicker media filters last longer, and reusable filters and electronic air cleaners need regular cleaning instead. A neglected filter is one of the most common reasons homes end up needing duct cleaning and furnace cleaning sooner.

Signs It Is Due

  • Visible grey buildup on the filter surface
  • More than three months since the last change
  • Reduced airflow from registers
  • The system cycling on and off more often
  • Dust settling faster than usual in the home
  • A reusable or electronic filter that has never been cleaned

Common Questions

How often should a furnace filter be changed?

Standard one-inch filters usually every one to three months, more often with pets or during heavy use. Thicker media filters can last six months to a year. The manufacturer’s guidance for your filter is the best starting point.

Is a higher-rated filter always better?

Not necessarily. A higher MERV rating captures finer particles but also restricts more airflow, and some systems are not designed for it. The right filter is one your system can move air through comfortably.

Can electronic air cleaners be cleaned?

Yes. The collector cells and prefilters in electronic air cleaners are designed to be cleaned rather than replaced, and they lose effectiveness quickly when they are not.

Can I book this on its own?

Yes. Filter maintenance can be booked on its own, or added to a duct or furnace cleaning visit.
